We can help people with skills . . . to improve old ones or learn new ones.\u00a0 <\/span>But it\u2019s just about impossible to change their behaviors in any meaningful way.\u00a0 <\/span>Yet we continue to waste time trying.<\/p>\n Take the example of Bill, ace IT guy.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s an electronics genius.\u00a0 <\/span>There isn\u2019t anything with a circuit board that he doesn\u2019t know or can\u2019t figure out.\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, he\u2019s perpetually crabby, ill-tempered, and believes everybody in the building is an idiot except for him.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s been counseled, numerous times, about his hostile behavior.\u00a0 <\/span>He always acknowledges the criticism and pledges to do better, but within about an hour and a half, he\u2019s back to his old crabby, ill-tempered self.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s 35 years old.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s very unlikely that a few counseling sessions are going to undo the behaviors it took Bill 35 years to learn.<\/p>\n The best solution, of course, is to hire people whose behaviors are a good fit with your company\u2019s culture.\u00a0 <\/span>But nobody bats 1000 when it comes to hiring the right people.\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes we get it wrong and end up with Bill.\u00a0 <\/span>When we do, we have to recognize that he is what he is and wasting time trying to modify his behavior would be a fool\u2019s errand.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Our only real options are to show him the door or find ways to put up with him.<\/p>\n But we don\u2019t like those options.\u00a0 <\/span>His skills are a valuable company resource that we would hate to lose. Besides, finding and hiring a replacement is expensive and time-consuming. On the other hand, putting up with him sends a signal to the rest of the organization that rude, abusive behavior is OK.\u00a0 <\/span>So we look for a third option.\u00a0 <\/span>We say to ourselves, \u201cWe can work with this guy.
