may already be familiar with it.\u00a0 It\u2019s the DISC behavioral assessment.\u00a0 While it\u2019s been around and widely used for many years, there are still lots of people who have never been exposed to it.\u00a0 If you know and understand DISC and have used it before, you can probably stop reading now because it\u2019s unlikely I will be telling you anything about DISC you don\u2019t already know.\u00a0 But if you\u2019re one of those people who has never been exposed to DISC, if you are intrigued by the benefits listed above, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and if you\u2019d like #000000;\">Using DISC for fun and profit . . . and did I mention it\u2019s FREE?!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First, DISC is <\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> an IQ test.\u00a0 The results of the assessment say nothing about how smart you are.\u00a0 Nor does the assessment say anything about your values, morals, or personal ethics.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t try to measure skills or knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">DISC is a behavioral assessment tool based on the theories of psychologist William Moulton Marston (who, under the pen name of Charles Moulton, created the Wonder Woman character for DC Comics).\u00a0 He conceived his behavioral theories in the 1920s which were later used by industrial psychologist Walter Vernon Clarke to develop the DISC behavioral assessment tool.\u00a0 This tool attempts to divide people into four distinct behavioral traits: <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ominant, <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nfluencing, <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">S<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">teady, and <\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">C<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ompliant (collectively referred to as <strong>D<\/strong>s, <strong>I<\/strong>s, <strong>S<\/strong>s, or <strong>C<\/strong>s).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We\u2019ll look at each of these in a bit more detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dominant.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you\u2019re a <strong>D<\/strong>, you\u2019re impatient and may have a short attention span.\u00a0 You\u2019re a big picture, action-oriented person.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to get bogged down in a lot of details and you don\u2019t want to talk something to death, you just want to get on with it.\u00a0 Your focus is always on results.\u00a0 Your communication style is minimalist.\u00a0 Your spoken and written communications are clipped, sometimes cryptic, often blunt.\u00a0 People may interpret your communication style as impersonal at best, or even rude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Influencing.<\/strong>\u00a0 In many ways, if you\u2019re an <strong>I<\/strong>, you\u2019re the polar opposite of a <strong>D<\/strong>.\u00a0 You\u2019re gregarious, talkative.\u00a0 You\u2019re a relationship-builder.\u00a0 You may tend to take action or make decisions emotionally, not rationally.\u00a0 You have a high need for social recognition and approval.\u00a0 Your communication style is warm and engaging. If you\u2019re going to err, you\u2019re going to err on the side of saying too much rather than too little.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Steady.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 An <strong>S<\/strong> is patient, loyal to a fault, but becomes insecure in the face of change . . . particularly rapid change.\u00a0 They can tend to be \u201clurkers\u201d who lay back in the weeds and watch what\u2019s going on very closely, but may not be active participants in what\u2019s going on until they feel it\u2019s safe.\u00a0 Their behavior is a reflection of how secure or insecure they feel.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like a lot of attention and will resist putting themselves \u201cout front\u201d whenever possible.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 In a meeting, they may tend to keep their thoughts, opinions, and ideas to themselves unless the leader works to draw them into the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Compliant.<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>C<\/strong>s are information junkies.\u00a0 Before they will make a decision or commit to anything, they want as much information in as much detail as possible.\u00a0 They operate best in an unambiguous environment surrounded by well-defined rules and procedures.\u00a0 They react badly to criticism of their work.\u00a0 Their communication style is to ask questions, endlessly, in an effort to get as much data as possible about the subject at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">None of these four traits are good or bad, no single one of them is more desirable than the others.\u00a0 And all of us possess at least a little bit of all four traits.\u00a0 Some of us will have one trait that completely overshadows the other three, while other people may have several traits that are more or less equal.\u00a0 Either way, understanding why we behave the way we do and why others behave the way they do is a key insight that can help improve communications, build leadership abilities, and do all the other things mentioned at the top of this letter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you haven\u2019t ever had a DISC assessment done on yourself but would like one, call me at (847) 665-9134 or email me at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:ARock46@aol.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ARock46@aol.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 I will be happy to put you in touch with a friend and colleague who will give you a FREE trial DISC assessment, and afterward, if you like, I will be happy to help you interpret your results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I hope to hear from you.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Would you be interested in a behavioral assessment tool that can help you: Strengthen your communication skills?
