{"id":673,"date":"2015-11-18T10:00:20","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T10:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rocksolidbizdevelopment.com\/ourblog\/?p=673"},"modified":"2025-07-01T17:20:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T17:20:23","slug":"five-things-to-do-before-december-31","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rocksolidbizdevelopment.com\/ourblog\/five-things-to-do-before-december-31\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Things To Do Before December 31"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Two years ago, I wrote a piece about things that ought to be done to close out the current year cleanly, and get a strong start in the new year.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Since this is the time of year to do those sorts of things, I thought it would be appropriate to post a similar piece.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So I went back and reviewed what I had written two years ago, and decided the material is still relevant and that I really couldn\u2019t say it much better now than I did back then.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While I did make a few small additions and changes, it is fundamentally a repost from two years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">January is a time of renewal.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It marks a new beginning, a fresh start.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">But there are things you should be doing now, before December 31, to get you out of the blocks fast when the year turns over.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If you\u2019re on a roll, you need to think about how to keep that roll going.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If the year now ending is one you\u2019d like to forget, then you need to think about how to make the new year better.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Either way, there are five things you should do before we say goodbye to the old year and ring in the new.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Actually, there are probably more than five things on your to-do list before the end of the year, so I hope the five I have in mind will be included.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">For more on this, please read below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Five Things To Do Before December 31<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">First, you need a written Annual Plan that outlines the three to five strategic initiatives you intend to implement next year to move your company forward.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Hopefully, this is already done, but if it isn\u2019t, there\u2019s still time.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This needs to be done thoughtfully, but it doesn\u2019t have to be a complicated or time-consuming task.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">A single page per strategy should do the trick.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Just start with a paragraph that describes the strategy, explains why you\u2019re implementing it, and lays out the benefit(s) you expect to come from it.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Then break the strategy down into individual tasks, assigning responsibilities and deadlines for each, and TA DA! . . . you\u2019re good to go.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I assume you would be making this Plan with the help of key managers, but if you\u2019re very small and doing this solo, then run the Plan by your attorney, banker, accountant, or other trusted advisor for their input.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(*) Second, you need a Profit Plan . . . sometimes called a budget.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">I prefer Profit Plan because \u201cbudget\u201d has a negative connotation.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It sounds restrictive, confining.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Profit Plan, on the other hand, is more positive.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It says, \u201cHere\u2019s the profit we intend to make next year, and here\u2019s how we intend to do it.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Start with a month-by-month sales forecast which is always the dicey part because sales forecasting isn\u2019t an exact science.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Be guided by your sales history, adjusting as necessary for current conditions.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The trick here is to come up with a forecast that\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">realistic<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">, neither unduly pessimistic nor overly optimistic.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Once you know what you expect to sell, determining your costs to complete your Profit Plan is relatively easy.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If necessary, get help from your accountant.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The strategic initiatives in your annual plan will almost certainly have cost and revenue implications, so be sure your Profit Plan takes those into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">(*) I imagine some of you are saying, \u201cNo duh Sherlock!<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Of course we\u2019re preparing a 2016 Profit Plan!<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Who isn\u2019t?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Unfortunately, more business owners than you would guess operate without the benefit of a Profit Plan. If you\u2019re such a CEO who doesn\u2019t use a Profit Plan (and you know who you are!), make 2016 the year you start using this fundamental business tool. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Third, do a customer review with the objective of ferreting out unprofitable customers.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">You know who they are.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">They\u2019re the ones who demand $100 worth of service for their $10 order.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Wouldn\u2019t it be nice to start the new year by making those problem customers available to your competitors?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Fourth, do an audit of your products or services.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Sometimes subtle changes in the market, in your customer mix, or in your labor and material costs can chip away at gross profit margins.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Take a look.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Are all your products or services producing their fair share of the company\u2019s gross profit.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Is it possible one or two have lost some of their luster?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">If so, your Annual Plan should include a strategy to return the underperforming products or services to their proper level of profitability, or if that\u2019s not possible, you may want to consider a strategy for phasing them out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">And finally, do an audit of your general ledger.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In part, you\u2019ll be doing this anyway to prepare your Profit Plan.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">But this additional scrutiny will tell you if any waste has slipped into the system that needs to be curtailed, or if costs are creeping up and need to be more carefully managed.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">You can almost always find something here to add to your bottom line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">So those are the five to-do\u2019s I recommend before December 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write an annual plan covering three to five strategic initiatives.<\/li>\n<li>Create a Profit Plan to act as your road map to the profitability you expect.<\/li>\n<li>Do a customer review and get rid of those who are not a good fit for you.<\/li>\n<li>Audit your products or services looking for any that are underperforming.<\/li>\n<li>Audit your general ledger looking for waste and\/or costs that are creeping higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">As I\u2019ve said, this is not intended to be a definitive list of <\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">all<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> the things you need to do before the year is out, but if you do these five, I guarantee you\u2019ll have a better year next year than you will if you don\u2019t do them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">For some small business owners, all this planning and financial stuff can be a bit intimidating.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;
