(Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">My previous posting asked, \u201cAre you a bad boss?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I then offered a number of bad boss behaviors (poor emotional control, indecisiveness, micromanaging, etc.) for your consideration.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Well, I apparently missed a few.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">I have gotten some notes (from people, I assume, who are bad bosses themselves, who are recovering bad bosses, or who at some point worked for a bad boss) asking how I could overlook a particular bad behavior when it is so egregious, so obvious, and such an affront to hard-working employees everywhere.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">So OK, we need an addendum to \u201cAre you a bad boss?\u201d in order to include those most heinous bad boss behaviors that I somehow missed.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">So if you were not guilty of any bad boss behaviors I described previously, you\u2019re not out of the woods yet.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Please read on to find out if any bad boss behaviors in this fresh batch resonate with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Are you a bad boss? (Part 2)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Let\u2019s face it, we all slip up once in awhile and behave in a way that is counterproductive.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">But those occasional lapses won\u2019t earn you the \u201cBad Boss\u201d label.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">It\u2019s when bad boss behaviors are the rule rather than the exception, that\u2019s when you earn your Bad Boss stripes.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">So take a look at the behaviors below and ask yourself honestly if any of those is a match for the way you do things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Workaholic.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you choose not to have a life outside of work, that\u2019s your choice and that\u2019s fine.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">But if you demand the same of your employees, you can expect someone to put a \u201cBad Boss\u201d bumper sticker on your car.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">And you\u2019ll deserve it.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When people are over-worked, energy, productivity, and creativity drop to very low levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fails to prioritize.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Are you into instant gratification?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When you want something done, do you want it done right now?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Is everything a \u201ctop priority?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If that\u2019s the case, you\u2019re definitely a Bad Boss.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When everything is a top priority, nothing is.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">And there will be chaos as your employees scramble to figure out which top priority really is the most important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fails to communicate.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Are you secretive?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Do you keep most company information to yourself?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Do you treat your employees like mushrooms, keeping them in the dark?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Most companies don\u2019t share everything with everyone, but you at least need to give people the basics.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Is the company doing well?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Where are we going and how do we expect to get there?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">What are our goals and are we on track to achieve them?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">When people are denied that basic kind of information, what\u2019s the clear message?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The boss doesn\u2019t trust us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Doesn\u2019t recognize and reward good work.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Have you ever said (or even thought), \u201cWhy should I have to congratulate people for doing their jobs?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">That\u2019s what I\u2019m paying \u2018em for!\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If so, you really need to go stand in a quiet corner for awhile until you can get your head on straight.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">You are a Bad Boss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Fails to provide a learning environment<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">People want to learn and grow in their jobs.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">They want to hone their skills and learn new ones.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">They want to get thrown into the deep end of the pool once in awhile . . . to be challenged to climb a really big mountain.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you give them only a steady diet of the same old mundane tasks, you are a Bad Boss and they will leave you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Scores zero on the empathy scale.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Good bosses learn to \u201cread\u201d people.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">They pay attention to body language, tone of voice, and other signs to know if someone is happy or sad, tired or energized, frustrated or content.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you\u2019re unable to do that, or unwilling to make the effort . . . if you\u2019re blissfully ignorant about how the people around you are feeling . . . you\u2019re a Bad Boss.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">You come off as being cold and uncaring, able to relate to people only as employees, not as human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you are guilty of any of the aforementioned bad boss sins, do something about it!\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Make it a personal mission to improve your leadership skills by eliminating, or at least mitigating, your bad boss behaviors.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">But maybe you don\u2019t want to change.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Maybe you\u2019re one of those individuals who says, \u201cHey!<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">That\u2019s just the way I am.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If people don\u2019t like it, they should find a job someplace else.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">If that\u2019s the case, you really are a bad boss, and your best performers really will find
