As it has for the past 10 years, the Daily Herald Business Ledger has published a list of the \u201cBest Places to Work in Illinois\u201d for 2015.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The \u201cBest Places to Work\u201d program is managed by the Best Companies Group (BCG) of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>BCG administers this program not only in Illinois, but in many other states around the country as well.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>BCG provides detailed employee surveys to each participating company, tabulates the results of those surveys, and determines which of the participating companies scored high enough to be included on the \u201cBest Places to Work in Illinois\u201d list.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>For the companies who choose to participate in the program, there is some time, effort, and expense involved, so I read through some of the comments from the \u201cBest Places to Work\u201d firms hoping to find out why they bothered.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>What did they hope to get out of it?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I also wanted to find out if there are any cultural themes held in common by the \u201cBest Places\u201d companies.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Please read on and I\u2019ll share what I learned.<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Places to Work in Illinois 2015<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

First, as you might expect, there\u2019s a certain amount of altruism at work here.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I spoke with several CEOs who put their companies into the \u201cBest Places to Work\u201d program and they told me they participated simply because it was the right thing to do.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>However, there are some sound business benefits that come out of it as well.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Better customer service.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>Southwest Airlines believes that the best way to put their customers first is to put their employees first.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Their belief is that happy, engaged employees will provide a high level of customer service.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The participants in \u201cBest Places to Work in Illinois\u201d seem to share that belief.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reduced turnover.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>When people find a place they enjoy and where they are treated well, they tend to stay longer.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Simple as that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Higher productivity.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>With less turnover, you have more experienced people doing the work rather than trainees who are learning while trying to get up to speed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Easier recruiting.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>No mystery here.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>When you have a reputation for being a great place to work, you\u2019ll have a drawer full of applications and resumes from people who want to work for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what, if anything, do these \u201cBest Place to Work\u201d have in common.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>What cultural norms or belief systems do they share?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, they are committed to providing the best employee benefits they can, but there are several other characteristics of \u201cBest Places\u201d companies that are equally important.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Radio Flyer (manufacturer of the iconic toy red wagon), it\u2019s all about creating an environment where people can do meaningful work and have their contributions valued and recognized.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That seemed to be a common theme with many of the \u201cBest Places\u201d participants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the participants mentioned \u201ccreating a family environment\u201d at work.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Through social activities, team-building events, and training exercises, they want employees to form close, lasting relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n

A number of participants cited community involvement as something that contributes to their \u201cBest Places to Work\u201d stature.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This could be in the form of financial contributions to local community institutions, or it could be giving employees paid time off to do charitable volunteer work.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Either way, employees like being associated with a company that helps improve the communities they live in.<\/span><\/p>\n
