For owners and managers, decision-making goes with the territory.\u00a0 We can’t escape it.\u00a0 It’s an important part of the job.\u00a0 Even if an executive presides over an inclusive, democratic decision-making process, he or she must still make sure that process is effective and efficient and doesn’t lead to grid lock.\u00a0 Decisions are what move an organization from where it is to where it wants to go, so allowing grid lock to creep in\u00a0will bring\u00a0an organization\u00a0to a grinding halt.\u00a0 To avoid grid lock, please read below.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA decision is an action an executive must take when he has information so incomplete that the answer does not suggest itself.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve all heard of \u201canalysis paralysis,\u201d right?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And most of us have probably seen it in action.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the decision-maker who won\u2019t make a decision.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s always one bit of information missing that he or she needs before making a decision.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Then another.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And another, on infinitum.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The message here is clear.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t wait until you have all the information you need to make a perfect decision, because you\u2019ll never have it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not to say that important decisions should be hasty or rushed, but leaders need to discipline themselves to recognize when they have assembled as much information and as many opinions as they reasonably can, and that further delay will not produce a better decision.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Decision-making is more art form than science.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It mixes data with experience, good thinking with instinct.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>So don\u2019t allow its imperfect nature cause a thoughtful and deliberate decision-making process slip into procrastination and unnecessary delay.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As the folks at Nike would say, \u201cJust do it!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
