{"id":478,"date":"2015-05-06T10:00:31","date_gmt":"2015-05-06T10:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rocksolidbizdevelopment.com\/ourblog\/?p=478"},"modified":"2025-07-01T17:20:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T17:20:24","slug":"outstanding-organizations-have-one-thing-in-common-an-absolute-sense-of-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rocksolidbizdevelopment.com\/ourblog\/outstanding-organizations-have-one-thing-in-common-an-absolute-sense-of-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Outstanding organizations have one thing in common: an absolute sense of mission."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mission, vision, and values are the three legs of a stool we call \u201cculture.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The leg we call \u201cmission\u201d is about purpose.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It answers the questions, \u201cWhy are we here?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What are we doing and why are we doing it?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Who are we trying to serve?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Without a shared sense of mission, an organization is adrift, just floating along, taking us wherever the currents take us, with no energy, no passion, and no sense of urgency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So how do we start drafting a \u201cmission statement?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases, it\u2019s a matter of brainstorming with the leaders of your organization to hammer out a few sentences (preferable only one sentence) that clearly state what we do, for whom we do it, and the problem(s) we intend to solve.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But if creative brainstorming isn\u2019t your thing and you need a more basic, step-by-step approach, try the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">For a simple mission statement, there are four parts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>2<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>3<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(I, We) <\/span>(verb that describes what you do i.e., help, build, transport, train, etc.)(who do you do this for)(what problem do you solve for them)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So, a simple mission statement for a kitchen and bath remodeling company might look something like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">We help busy Chicago-area homeowners who need to remodel a kitchen or bath, but are overwhelmed by the complexity of it and don\u2019t know where to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We<\/li>\n<li>Help<\/li>\n<li>Who? busy Chicago-area homeowners who need to remodel a kitchen or bath<\/li>\n<li>Problem? Overwhelmed by the complexity of it and don\u2019t know where to start.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This formula-type approach may lead to a somewhat stiff, mechanical result, but at least it\u2019s a start.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It gives you and your leaders something to tinker with until you get a result that feels right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For more on \u201cmission\u201d and some examples of well-crafted mission statements, please continue reading below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Outstanding organizations have one thing in common: an absolute sense of mission.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So why do we need a \u201cmission statement?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Primarily for two reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It gives the existing organization a unified, cohesive sense of purpose so that everyone is pulling in the same direction.<\/li>\n<li>In our recruiting process, to use a Jim Collins metaphor, it helps us get the right people on the bus.\u00a0 After all, the more the candidate knows about what we do, why we do it, and who we serve, the more both parties can make an informed decision as to whether or not the candidate will be a good \u201cfit.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">So let\u2019s look at a few corporate mission statements that I believe are well done.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Whether you agree or disagree, they will be helpful to you as you craft your own.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Google<\/strong>:<\/span>\u00a0To organize the world\u2019s information and make it universally accessible and useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bristol-Myers Squibb<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">:<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">To discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients prevail over serious diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #010101;\">Conoco\/Phillips:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #010101;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">To use our pioneering spirit to responsibly deliver energy to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #010101;\">CSX Corporation:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #010101;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">To be the safest, most progressive North American railroad, relentless in the pursuit of customer and employee excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CVS Corporation:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To be the easiest pharmacy retailer for customers to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Darden Restaurants:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc.)<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To nourish and delight everyone we serve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dow Chemical Company:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">To constantly improve what is essential to human progress by mastering science and technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #010101;\">Ford Motor Company:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #010101;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">We are a global family with a proud heritage, passionately committed to providing personal mobility for people around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #010101;\">Levi Strauss &amp; Company:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #010101;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #010101;\">To market the most appealing and widely worn casual clothing anywhere.
